So, I was talking w a historian friend & she tells me this is indeed folklore. The hooks/subtable were to keep drinks off the table. Folks'd hang their mugs on the hooks. Gunbelts were typically collected at the door, which makes sense on second thought. Everyone having their gun accessible to aim at eachother under the table ain't really gonna prevent any sort of shootout, dig?

Still a neat anecdote.

I actually don't have a reason to make fun of this one, Ted. It's an interesting anecdote & well written to boot. Nice.

I remain convinced that if you weren't so gullible & I weren't so goddamned cute, we'd get along grand.
